Autumn and Winter Arts and Crafts ActivitiesIdeas to Keep Kids Entertained and the Family Active When it is Cold
Instead of wasting time watching non-stop TV on colder days and nights, take advantage of these beautiful times of the year to involve the family in fun activities.
Kids can learn what autumn and winter is all about in a very natural way through arts, crafts and play. Teach them about the first day of fall and the first day of winter, encourage them to take advantage of these wonderful times of the year. Most of the autumn and winter activities that are the most fun are free or cost very little money. Fall Arts and CraftsSimple ideas will keep the kids busy for hours: Daytime activities can include going for walks to collect different colored and shaped leaves and coming home to make their own place mat. Stick leaves onto a piece of sticky contact paper, peel the back off a second piece of contact paper and stick on top of the leaves. Trim the edges for an instant autumn place mat. Coloring in is always popular with small kids – try this free autumn coloring page: Playing in the Leaves. Make a scarecrow out of a brown paper bag, stick on wiggly eyes, and cut the mouth, nose and hair out of different brightly colored craft paper. Collect a whole bunch of acorns, bring them home and paint them in different colored bright paints (oil paints are best for this craft – make sure there is newspaper on the table and that the brushes are properly cleaned afterwards). To make an owl – collect a pine cone, glue a bit of eyelash trim or similar to the back of a pair of large google eyes. Glue the google eyes to the pine cone, cut a small triangle piece of yellow felt and glue it between the eyes. Winter Arts and Crafts IdeasSnow family finger puppets: Take an old white or cream knitted glove, draw on eyes and mouths with a black marker. Glue or sew on tiny red pom poms for noses, and decorate with old scraps of fabric to make scarves, shawls. Glue on bigger pom poms to make ear muffs. Winter coloring in page for smaller kids: Snow ball fight. Jewelry tree holder - this is a great project for girls. Find a small, sturdy, branch with many branches. Clip off extra branches and leaves, then spray paint or paint the branches in the color of choice. Place in a flower pot or clay pot, fill with stones to keep the tree in place. Rings, necklaces and bracelets can be hung on the branches.
