Children's Party With a Bug Theme

Kids Just Love Creepy, Crawly Insects

Apr 8, 2009 Tania Cowling

Why not plan a "bug party" for the children and their friends? It's ooey, gooey and so much fun!

When the weather turns warm and beautiful, this is the best time to plan a party that revolves around nature. Children are truly fascinated with bugs. They may be creepy, but kids love them. Here are some ideas to help you plan this theme, whether it's for a birthday or just an "anytime" party.

Bug Party Decorations

  • Make a cooperative mural with all the kids at the party. Make a "handipillar" (caterpillar) on a long sheet of butcher paper. Paint each child's hand with poster paints and instruct them to make a print on the paper in a straight line. Place each hand next to each other. Draw in a cute caterpillar face using a black marker, also have each child write their name under their handprint. A nice way to remember this special day!
  • Cover your food table with a green tablecloth. Scatter candy worms and plastic bugs all over the table.
  • Place green and yellow Hellium balloons all over the party place.
  • Hang paper spiders and bumblebees from the ceiling.
  • Also hang lots of green streamers as if a person is walking through the grass.

Insect Games To Play

Stick the Spot on the Ladybug. Draw a large red ladybug shape and place this on the wall. Cut out black construction paper dots. Give each child a dot, along with some tape, and head them in the direction of the ladybug. A blindfold is optional according to the ages of your party guests.

Get Some Exercise with the "Bug Boogie".

Grasshoppers go jumpity, jump, jumpity jump (jump up and down)

Caterpillars crawl bumpity, bump, bumpity, bump (crawl on the ground)

Playful crickets go hoppity, hop, hoppity, hop (hop up and down on one foot)

As we "boogie", happy children like you will jumpity, bumpity, hoppity too! (jump, hop, and dance).

Plan a "Bug Hunt." Hide a large amount of toy bugs around the party place. Let the children find them and keep the bugs. A variation of this game is to fill a large dishpan with rice or sand and toy bugs. The children can take turns catching the bugs by pulling them out with tweezers.

Make "Antennae" Party Hats. Provide a plastic headband for each child. Attach two long chenille strips (pipe cleaners), curling them first. Winding the strips around pencils can do the curling. At the tops, glue on pom-poms or poke small Styrofoam ball into the strip.

Bug Songs Are Fun To Sing

The Bug Song (Tune: "The Wheels on the Bus")

The Fireflies in the air fly up and down,

Up and down, up and down.

The Fireflies in the air fly up and down,

All around the fields.

The Ladybug on the leaves runs back and forth,

Back and forth, back and forth.

The Ladybug on the leaves runs back and forth,

All around the fields.

Give Out Goodie Bags

This is an easy party for goodie bags! Use simple brown lunch bags and decorate with bug stickers. Fill them with toy bugs, gummie worms, silly putty, insect stickers, spider rings and so on. Tie the bags shut with raffia for an all natural look.

End The Party with Something Sweet

Layer chocolate pudding and chocolate cookie crumbs in a clear plastic cup. While making layers, hide edible bugs in the pudding. Top with whipped cream and garnish with a gummi bug on top.

Use this party idea to spend time with your child and their friends. This theme helps children understand nature and all those cute little creatures that roam the earth-creepy for you, but so much fun for them!
