Christmas Clay Angel Kids Can Make

Here is a Sweet Decoration for the Mantle

Dec 2, 2006 Elece Hollis

This article tells how to make an unusual Christmas decoration angel from clay and paper.

This pretty little angel will be a delightful addition to your mantlepiece this Christmas or a decoration for your table. A smaller version without a real candle can be made for tree ornaments.

Make them early as they will need several days for the clay to dry thoroughly before it is painted.

You will need poster board, homemade ornament clay. (See recipe here) , a birthday cake candle or length of white pipe cleaner, and enamel paint.

Start with the paper. Draw a circle six inches in diameter. Cut it in half and roll each half into a cone shape. Tape the cones closed. You now have a base for two angels.

Knead your clay and roll it flat with a rolling pin to about 1/16 inch thick. Wet your fingers and work the clay smoothly onto the angel's cone. If there are holes patch them with bits of moist clay.

Now make two 1/2 inch balls for the hands and stick them to the front of the angel like two fists held in front of her. Stick a candle or pipe cleaner into one hand.

For the head make a one-inch ball and smooth it onto the top of the cone. After the angel clay has dried and hardened about two days, you can paint it. The clay will dry without heating in an oven.

Gray is nice for the dress and a sparkle of glitter is a fine touch. The face can be white or brown and the hair gold or black. Paint on the features with black ink and a small pointed brush.

When the paint is dry, cut wing shapes and a halo for each angel out of stiff and pretty colored paper--maybe yellow or gold or the new swirly multi-colored construction paper. Glue them on with tacky glue.

Note of caution: Don't allow the candle to be lighted as it may cause a fire and also cannot be replaced when used up. A white pipe cleaner will look like a candle, but not be tempting to light.

I don't seem to understand the instructions...you draw 2 circles and cut them out...then cut them in half. But then tape them together??!?! And you will be leaving the poster board in the angels? Why not just use poster board for the body? I'm also taking that since there is paper inside you cannot use the oven to dry them either.
