Classification and Sorting Project

Children cut out and sort magazine pictures into groups

Sep 28, 2006 Elece Hollis

All you need for this activity is an old magazine and a pair of scissors. The child cuts out photos and processes them into categories.

This is a great activitiy to use on a rainy day. It requires no advance planning or search for materials. The child will need an old magazine that he can freely cut up. Let him look through and cut out all the photos he can.

When he is finished and has sorted and thrown out all the scraps, he will need a large table surface to sort his pictures into categories. Allow him to think through the sorting process and decide what categories he wants to use. He may sort by color or by size. He could sort into plant, human, and animal groups.

After the student has done an initial sorting, suggest another criteria for selection. Adults with pets, adults with children and adults alone. People working versus people playing. Objects for work, objects of art, objects for leisure. he can sort by use, say kitchen items, bedroom furniture, livingroom furniture. There is an infinte numbers of ways the same group of pictures can be sorted.

Refer to the classification of plants by botanists and the classifying of animals. This system still used today was developed by Carolus Linnaeus for classifying living things into groups having common attributes. Here are some simple animal classification coloring pages to print. And some more sheets to color,

The pictures may be glued onto construction paper and made into a small book with the categories labeled. The pictures can be saved in a manila envelope or in file folders and re-sorted another time.
