Create family fun while making this unique craft keepsake box. This article outlines project steps for a very special children's activity.

Explore colors, shapes, and textures while creating this fun craft keepsake box. Children can design and make this art project with minimal help (although adult supervision is always required). The finished product can be used to store special treasures or everyday items such as toy card or doll clothes.

Materials Needed to Create the Craft Box

  • Reused cardboard box
  • Construction paper or other paper
  • Tissue paper Scissors
  • Glue
  • Optional: Paint and/or markers

Reusing or Recycling Materials for Art Activities

This children’s art activity can be created almost entirely out of reused items. Begin with a used cardboard box. This can be a tissue box, shoe box, or any similarly sized box. Make sure to thoroughly wipe clean the box before use. Avoid using boxes that once held food (such as cereal or cracker boxes) if any family member or household guest has a food allergy.

Instead of relying solely on store bought construction paper and tissue paper, try reusing other paper items during this activity. These may include the blank side of fliers or school announcements, child made drawings, computer print outs, or even completed and returned school work sheets. Additional sources of materials include used gift wrap, gift bags, or tissue paper from a gift bag or box.

Steps to Create the Craft Keepsake Box

This activity is a great way for children and parents to work together as a family. It is suggested that this be a collaborative process, involving all family members.

  1. Search for and locate all materials needed. If regular household items are being reused as art materials, try a family scavenger hunt. Assign each family member a specific material and see who can find the most in the fastest time.
  2. Cut a variety of shapes from the paper being used. Include circles, triangles, rectangles, squares, and more. Create more advanced shapes such as octagons for older children. Use a variety of colors for the shapes.
  3. Collage (glue) the shapes to the outside of the cardboard box. Cover all of the sides. Take glue drying breaks in between sides.
  4. After the glue has dried, cut or tear pieces of tissue paper. Crumple or bunch the tissue paper, and glue to the box. This will add texture.
  5. Optional: Use tempera paint or markers to add lettering. Write the name of what will be stored in the box. Examples include toy cars, baseball cards, doll clothes, or photos.

The craft keepsake box is a fun kid’s activity that can be created by the entire family. Gather together art materials, or search for household items that can be reused in order to make this colorful art project. After the glue has dried, children can use this unique creation to store special toys and objects.
