Cut Out A Shadow Silhouette

Save your Shadow

Nov 16, 2006 Elece Hollis

Make a silhouette of your friend's head and profile by tracing the outline of his shadow onto white paper.

Want to catch a shadow in black and white? Here's how to do it!

Tape a large piece of white paper up on the wall.

Place a bright light, like a gooseneck lamp or a pedestal lamp where it will shine on the paper. Seat your friend or relation in a chair between the lamp and the paper so that his head's shadow is showing up on the paper.

Now turn him until a clear profile of his head, face and neck shows. Have the "shadow maker" sit very still while you outline the shadow with pencil on the white paper.

Now he can relax and you can put up a new sheet of white paper and repeat the process for yourself and each child taking part. Try varying the size of the shadow picture by moving the lamp closer or further from the model. (Closer for larger. Farther away for smaller.)

Now you can carefully cut on your pencil lines starting and finishing at the bottom of the page.

Mount the shadow on a blue, black , or other dark page of construction paper. Label with name, the date and ag of the model.

These make great Christmas gifts--especially for grandparents, or out -of-town friends and relatives who want to see how you have grown and changed.
