Cooking with Kids - Fall Recipes
Here are two yummy recipes that kids can make with the help of an adult. Enjoy!
Homemade Applesauce
Ingredients:
6 firm apples
2 tablespoons sugar
1/2 cup water
Directions:
Peel and cut apples into chunks.
Place apples in a skillet with a lid.
Sprinkle sugar over apples and add water.
Heat, covered, on a medium heat for approximately 15 minutes. Half way through the cooking time, check to make sure the water has not evaporated. If so, add 4 tablespoons of water and continue cooking with the lid in place.
When apples are very soft, remove them from the heat.
Mash the apples with fork, and serve warm.
Refrigerate unused portions in an air-tight container.
Pumpkin Pie
Ingredients:
1 (16 oz.) can pumpkin
3 eggs
1 cup brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ginger
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
1 cup evaporated milk
1 pie shell, frozen
Directions:
Preheat oven to 425 degrees F.
Mix all ingredients with a wooden spoon and pour into the pie shell.
Bake for 15 minutes.
Turn oven down to 350 degrees F and bake for an additional 35 minutes.
Kids Crafts - Fall Crafts
Here are two terrific crafts to celebrate Fall.
Leaf Rubbing Greeting Cards
Materials:
Leaves of different sizes and shapes
White paper
Crayons
Markers
Newspaper
Directions:
Lay down some newspaper on your work surface.
Fold your white paper to the size you want your card to be, either in half or quarter-fold.
Place a leaf under the spot where you want a picture to be on the card.
Rub over the leaf with a crayon, trying to keep the crayon within a short distance around the leaf.
Remove the leaf and decorate your drawing with markers for the leaf vein lines.
Continue making the rest of the greeting card by adding your own wording.
Optional: Add sequins and other embellishments to your card, if you desire.
Apple Tree Tote Bag
Materials:
Tote bag (craft store)
Fabric paints (green, brown, red, and yellow)
Paintbrush
2 apples
Newspaper
Directions:
Fold over some newspaper and insert it into the tote bag, laying it flat. This will keep the paints from coming through to the other side of the bag.
With a paintbrush, use brown paint to make a tree trunk. Let dry.
Cut an apple horizontally. Make leaves for the tree by brushing a thin layer of green fabric paint onto the apple and pressing it around the top of the trunk. Repeat several times (make sure to look for the star in the print). Let dry.
Cut another apple in half vertically. Pick the side that still has the stem and brush with red fabric paint. Then "hang" juicy apples on the tree.
