When kids get bored, they can become frustrated and whiny. With a little preparation, have some fun with them creating some wonderful winter arts and crafts.

Winter is a time to teach kids about the seasons and the winter equinox. It's also a time when families get together inside out of the cold and share stories, fun and crafts. Encourage children to stay away from the TV or computer for awhile and spend some happy hours making simple, inexpensive crafts.

Print this free penguin template. The penguin template has a small illustration of the finished craft to help children have an idea of how it looks when assembled. The last piece should be the white torso heart, which goes upside down on the torso. The beak should be placed on the heart piece that has a small dot. Children can add hats, bags and accessories as they wish.

There are plenty of downloadable, free templates available on the internet for all kinds of paper crafts, card-making, scrapbooking, gift tag making, mobiles, paper snowflakes and so on.

Coloring page: Kids of nearly all ages love coloring in activities. Kids will love this cute shivering dolphin/seal coloring page. To make things more interesting, decorate the page with glitter and stick on balls of cotton wool to give the picture a snow effect.

Winter Themed Crafts in Metal, Paper and Wool

Metal cut-out craft: Take a disposable aluminum pie plate and draw a simple design – snow flake, moon or snowman – on it with a black marker. Cut it and use a punch to make a hole at the top to hang up with string or make a mobile. It can be decorated with indentations in the metal if desired.

Winter Weaved Placemat: Cut a piece of blue or silver paper into 1 inch strips, then do the same with a piece of white paper. Weave the pieces over and under each other until all the paper is used. Decorate if desired, or leave plain, then laminate it to make a durable winter placemat.

Knitting: All kinds of soft toys can be make simply by knitting squares and then sewing the squares together. Winter is an excellent time to teach kids (boys and girls) how to knit and they will have great fun making up bears, snowmen, mice or colorful dolls in knitted squares. For a knitted bear, knit two large squares for the body, 2 long rectangles for each arm and leg. Knit two tiny squares for each ear. Sew bits together when finished and add some eyes. Then sew on a nose and a mouth.

Winter fun does not have to be high tech or expensive. Most children always remember with fondness times when the family did something together, baking, cooking or making something and winter can provide the ideal time to take some time off and spend it together.
