Kids, make these simple musical instruments from everyday materials, then have a parade or a concert! This article gives directions for finger cymbals, a drum, and flute.
A drum is easy! Make one from an oatmeal box, an empty coffee cane or a popcorn tin. decorate the can and secure the plastic or metal lid with duct tape. beat on the drum with wooden spoons or dowels.
Make a flute from a cardboard tube (a paper towel tube) by punching four holes in one side and one in the opposite side, cover one end with waxed paper held in place with a rubber band. Hum into the open end. Move your fingers on the holes while keeping your thumb on the opposite hole.
Finger cymbals can be made from baby food jar lids. Punch a hole in center of each with a hammer and nail. Thread a length of elastic through the hole in a lid and form a loop the size of your finger on the top side of the lid. Then pass the thread back through the same hole and tie in a knot on the underside of the lid. Make an elastic loop for the second cymbal also. Play these cymbals by putting one on the middle finger and one on the thumb and clanging them together.
