Tips to Make Children's Spa Day Safe
Be aware that getting a manicure or a pedicure can put children at risk for developing a skin allergy or viral or fungal infection. Taking some common sense precautions can help parents avoid the health hazards without spoiling the fun for the little ones.
Take Precautions to Prevent Manicure and Pedicure Infection
Where children are concerned, it is particularly important to do the following:
- Make sure the nail salon is licensed by the health department and that all technicians are properly trained.
- Check to see if the child has a cut or open wound on either the hands or feet before getting a manicure or pedicure.
- Ask the manicurist to push back cuticles with a clean stick. Do not allow cuticles to be cut. Removing cuticles can lead to a bacterial infection in the places where the skin has been removed. Cuticles are there for a reason.
- Also check for possible skin allergies. In particular, certain chemicals, glitter and glue can cause an allergic reaction.
- Some polishes may have excessive amounts of lead. Certain polishes are on the recall list. Ask ahead of time what polishes will be used.
- Metal manicure tools should be sterilized. Water should be clean, disinfected.
- The stations should be cleared and fresh paper set out for each new customer.
- Cotton balls, Q-tips, towels and similar materials should not reused.

There is a wide range of prices for services administering to kids depending on the type of salon. Typical costs such as these can be found on the Internet for children ages 4-13:
- Kids Manicure: $15
- Kids Pedicure: $20
- Nail Art: $1 ea. Nail
Note that birthday parties at salons offer special deals depending on the number of guests. Manicure technicians are available to come to the birthday girl’s home. Usually the costs are higher, however.

When in doubt, doctors recommend that customers bring the child's own manicure tools to the salon to avoid the risk of possible infection. Manicure kits are a good gift to include in a birthday goody bag, and party guests can use the kit for their personal use at the salon.

Should Infection to Fingers and Toes Set In
If a child experiences redness and/or swelling following a manicure or pedicure, administer an antibacterial ointment and follow the directions for use. If the infection persists for more than three days or becomes worse, see a doctor or health care provider.
Kids can enjoy a safe and fun- filled experience at a nail salon so long as parents or adults do some preliminary research to make sure that the salon is not only child friendly, but also sanitary and aware of the special needs of children
