Kids Interested in Film-MakingTips for Getting the Most Out of This Technical Field
Here are tips for the kid who likes to make his own films. It is an interesting and rewarding hobby for those who enjoy technical gadgets and filming.
So, your kid is ready to be the next George Lucas or maybe even the next Steven Spielberg! Your child loves to be behind the scenes of film-making and wants to learn every in and out of the business. How do you learn the biz? It is competitive out there, but you can start film, even at a young age. Here are some tips for kids that are really into making movies and films. Take a Class on Film-MakingOne of the first things that you will want to do when your child is into film-making is to take a class. There are many places that offer basic and advanced film making for kids. Check with your local theater or acting school to see what they have to offer. You may even find that some school districts offer after school film-making classes or classes in the summer. Check around to see what is near you and register for a class. Get Some Film-Making ExperienceWhen you are into film-making, you will not only want to learn how to work behind the camera, but you will also want to learn to work in front of the camera. This is when you need a little bit of experience. There are ample opportunities for you to learn how to act in front of the camera. You can even start off volunteering or acting at your local community theater. You can also take acting for film classes. Remember that even if you don’t love being in front of the camera, you need a working knowledge on how to do it since you will be directing your actors. Encourage your child to get comfortable with every aspect of film-making to make him a well-rounded individual. Get a Good Team TogetherWhen you want to make films, you will also need a good team or a group of friends who are also interested. Explain to your child and his friends that they should do this for fun and not expect to "make it big" any time soon. However, if your child has some friends that also love acting and film-making then starting together, they will be able to combine their separate talents to make a great team. You need someone who is good at writing, a few willing actors, some friends that have an eye for props and costumes, and in general friends that are just willing to help out. The kids should meet often and come up with plans, and then work together to carry them out. Keep everyone on the team in the loop, too. Have Good EquipmentAnother very important part of making films is having the right equipment. You need at least one good camera and possibly even two. Encourage your child to learn how the camera works and how to maintain the equipment. It is also a good idea to have a good computer (for posting the films), lighting, costumes, and props. You and your child can often find costumes and props at consignment shops or at yard sales, so you are not putting a lot of money into it, especially during your child's early phase of getting into film-making. When your child wants to get into film-making, the world is wide open. Encourage your child to have fun while he is learning. You never know when he may make it big. Lots of kids are gaining attention on places like YouTube.
