Kid-Safe YouTube Videos with Totlol

Editor's Choice Totlol Protects Children from Inappropriate Adult Content

Mar 28, 2009 Sara McGrath

YouTube hosts plenty of great videos for kids, but protecting children from inappropriate content is not easy on the YouTube website. That's where Totlol comes in.

Totlol.com is a community-moderated video website for kids, which hosts only the videos that the parent community submits, screens, and approves. Parents have the option to participate by scouting YouTube for videos, submitting and screening videos, and creating video collections.

Video collections are play lists of videos grouped by subject or theme, such as seasons or Clifford the Big Red Dog. In addition to the many existing collections, search results, tags, and subject categories can also be played as a collection.

Wth Totlol, children get the benefit of YouTube's huge library in a format designed especially for them. Parents can trust in the community selection and screening process and can create collections especially for their children. The continuous play of a personally created collection allows parents to walk away from the computer with the assurance that the child is viewing safe content.

As with YouTube, Totlol users can create favorites lists, subscribe to collections, and set other personalization options and parental controls. YouTube accounts can be securely linked with the Totlol account to allow users to play their own videos in the Totlol interface.

Entertainment Videos

Children can dial in purely for entertainment, watching popular cartoons such as Dora the Explorer, The Wiggles, and Babar, without the interruption of commercials.

Stream Music Videos for Kids

Children can stream music video collections and have a dance party. Popular music videos include Dan Zanes, Laurie Berkner, and They Might Be Giants. Additionally, there are many existing dance video collections.

Totlol's Educational Video Collections

Parents and children alike will appreciate Totlol's Educational Video Collections, including favorites such as Sesame Street and Schoolhouse Rock. Peter Weatherall's musical videos introduce topics such as the water cycle and clouds.

The collection feature allows parents to create play lists of videos tailored to their children's current interests and learning objectives. For example, a child who is learning letters and early reading could benefit from a collection featuring Word World, Between the Lions, Schoolhouse Rock, and Sesame Street, as well as the existing Counting and Alphabet Megamix and Ultimate ABC collections.

For a child who expresses an interest in carnivorous plants, for example, a parent would enter a search on Totlol. If the desired subject is not found, the parent could then scout for videos and create a collection for the child. The newly submitted videos are immediately available to the person who submits them, but must go through screening before becoming available to other users.

Totlol allows parents and children to enjoy YouTube's video library with ease and assurance of appropriate content. Kids can freely browse videos and parents can creatively organize tailored content into playable collections. In this way, Totlol provides the best of YouTube designed especially for children.
