Doing Leaf Rubbings and Making a Leaf Monster

© Elece Hollis

Help your child make some leaf rubbings with crayons and fall leaves. Or make an autumn poster and a leaf monster or leaf clown.

Have you collected some leaves and pressed them? If you missed the press instructions, find out how to start a collection and make a simple press.

Leaf rubbings are simple art projects and help the student see the different shapes of leaves. He will learn the types of veins-straight, feather and hand veins. Notice that the primary vein divides the leaf into two equal halves. These two halves are alike but not identical, especially at the base. If they are offset they are termed assymetrical. Lay the leaves face down on a hard surface, cover with a sheet of paper and rub back and forth with a crayon until the shape of the leaf and its veins shows clearly.

A second fun art project is making a leaf picture - a monster or a clown. With a variety of leaves lay out a clown or a friendly monster with a nice large leaf for the body. Use a round or heart shaped leaf for the face.

Pine needles are leaves too and make funny hair, or use leaf stems to make antennas. Glue on pumpkin seeds to make funny eyes. Small pointy leaves make good arms and legs.

When you are happy with your creation, paste him with tacky craft glue unto poster board. Then press him for a week or two between sheets of newspaper, under some heavy books or a cutting board weighted with a brick.

An autumn poster can feature leaves, seeds, pictures of pumpkins and other autumn sights on a poster board. Add a nice poem about fall and hang the poster in a nursing home where it can bring smiles to everyone who sees it.

Read this article for students for additional autumn ideas, ideas for observing falling leaves, leaf pile fun, and collecting and making a leaf collage.

Go on another scavenegr hunt . You may find some great stuff along with your leaves to add to your museum of nature.

If you were the person who loves nature art or craft, you should have ever seen leaf painting or pressed leaf and flower art. But today I love to show you another gorgeous leaf art. Yes, PRESSED LEAF SCULPTUR, 100% hand sculpturing portraits, landscapes and letters on fall leaves of phoenix trees.

This gorgeous leaf art originated in a small town in China, created by a famous folk artist, Huang Taisheng. His leaf sculpture was inspired by running across an erose leaf of ginkgoes, which was created a pattern similar to the map of China by insect. A new idea popped into his mind, why not sculptures the leaf by hand, utilizes the vein of the leaf?

Mr. Huang dedicated his life to leaf sculpture from 1984. His first artwork was showed to the world after ten years, highly appreciated and most of his artwork have been kept in museum and collected by some notables worldwide.

His leaf sculpture is an amazing and unique artwork that combines the orient art and Modern Science. In 1994, his leaf sculpture was listed in the Guinness World Records.

Nowadays, this pressed leaf sculpture is pursued and admired by some nature artists in China. Some technical workshops have been even established to research and inherit this leaf art. ARTISTIC LEAF WORKSHOP in Shanghai is the ones. They have popularized this leaf sculpture to more common people successfully as personalized home decor and unique gift.

It is hard to say whether good or bad when this folk craft become commercialized, but one point is worth to be positive that this leaf sculpture are acquainted and appreciated by more and more people, but not only kept by few people as rare collection. We believe this artwork would be really brought into worldwide.

Just as Mr. Huang said, the way is paved by yourself; you could be on the side of success one day, as long as keeping straight with persistence. A real art belong to worldwide and universe.
