Learning to Sort and ClassifyChildren learn to sort common items
Children love to sort and this is a great asset to them being a pre-math skill which can easily be taught at home.
In this activity children can sort any set of small items. I have used marbles which children love and cannot resist sorting. Coins can be sorted by denomination. Crayons are easily sorted by their color. In fact, many objects can be sorted by value, color or size. A collection of colored pencils or a pack of construction papers, just about any classroom supplies can be sorted. Colored plastic-coated paper clips, pencils and pens, chalks,as well as math manipulatives designed especially of counting and sorting make great sorters. Still, look around. What is available that a child is attracted to? He can sort rocks, pebbles, poker packages of seeds, canned goods in the pantry, even fruit. Sorting and dividing objects into groups or sets teaches a basic skill that will help the child learn math. Try this classifying project to develop scientific thinking skills.
