Memorial Day, a long standing tradition, is a special day observed each May to honor, bring awareness and pay respect to those brave men and women who have given their lives defending America.
Originally called “Decoration Day”, the special day was first celebrated on May 30, 1868. At that time, graves of those who died in the Civil War were decorated. Later, all men and women who gave the ultimate sacrifice were honored. In 1971, the date was changed to match the federal observance day. While Memorial Day normally marks the beginning of summer, the day is donned with flying flags, parades, picnics patriotic music and fanfare.
