Here is a simple windowsill gardening project. Grow a liitle "furr" tree before Christmas. This clever little project will amaze and delight your children.
To grow a little furry fir tree in time for Christmas, plant a large pinecone with grass seed and set it in a sunny window to sprout. you will need:
First assemble the "ingredients."
Begin by submerging the pinecone in warm water to soak for about twenty minutes. ( If you allow the cone to soak too long, it will close up and you will have to dry it to get it to reopen its bracts.)
When it is thouroughly soaked, set the cone upright (pointed end up) in potting soil about 1 1/2 inches deep.
Sprinkle potting soil into the open bracts or scales of the pinecone and then do the same with your grass seed.
Water the soil at the base of the pinecone every day several times. Make certain it stays moist.
