School Fun for Preschoolers

Get preschoolers in on the back to school excitement by guiding them in some school-style activities.

Sit your preschoolers down at a table or small desk with some kindergarten supplies and let them do some school work for fun and learning.

Do you a little one who is wishing to be old enough for school? You can give him a taste of the excitement by taking him shopping for school supplies of his own.

Provide a plastic tub with a snap-on lid for the crayons, blunt scissors, glue, colored pencils, erasers, construction paper, and a lined kindergarten pad. A small ring binder with sheet protectors for art work is great for saving paperwork neatly. It is also handy for presentation of the child's work to friends and family.

Can you find a special child-sized spot where the child can study and work? A small desk or play table or even a spot beside a lamp table with a cushion serving as a chair is just right.

Counting is a good school activity with counting bears, buttons, plastic chips, pencils or any assorted small objects. Teach simple counting to twenty. Then try some adding and subtracting with your items.

Practice sorting small objects by their colors, shapes and sizes. This is a pre-math skill.

Art is a definite part of all good kindergarten programs. Try finger paints, which kids can mix up with this paint recipe or chalk on a blackboard. Mix up a batch of clay or playdough.

Kid's love to cut and paste. Let them cut up an old magazine or workbook and glue the pictures on poster board. Choose a theme such as pets or foods for the poster.

Don't miss out on story time. Reading aloud to your child can be a great start on the path to reading well.

Teach the child to print his own first name and copy some of the lowercase alphabet letters.

Drill on the position words until you have taught behind, beside, under, in front, over, etc.

Show the child the basic concept of a calendar-how it is set up in days and weeks and months. Talk about the seasons.
