Sports Card Trading Guide

A Hobby for Sports Enthusiasts

Aug 28, 2007 Denise Oliveri

Hobbies are a great way to get kids interested in doing something they enjoy. Many kids have taken up the hobby of collecting and trading sports cards.

Sports card trading is a very popular hobby among kids. They get together and make trades, hoping that they made the right ones. Kids even come up with clever games to play with sports cards. Use this sports card trading guide to help your child develop a hobby of collecting and trading cards.

Keep it Simple

Usually a child will get very interested and excited about collecting sports cards because he has seen a friend's collection. Of course, he wants to get his collection as big as he can as quick as he can so he, too, can join in the fun of trading. Before rushing out and buying cases of cards, it is probably a good idea to start small. See if your child is truly interested in this new hobby before making a huge investment.

Talk to Others

Whether you head into a discount store or a sports card specialty shop, it is a good idea to know what you are looking for. If your child seems genuinely serious about pursuing this hobby, there are certain things to know, such as:

  • What brands are most sought after?
  • What players are most people looking to obtain?
  • How much are you willing to pay for cards?
  • Are you getting a good deal?

Talking to others who are already collecting and trading is the way to go. Just make sure it is somebody you know and trust.

Stuff to Get You Started

The basic materials that your child will need when starting a collection is a binder (between 1-inch to 2-inch), pocket protector sleeves that fit in a binder, and cards, of course. You can buy individual sleeves for cards that are particularly special and should be stored some where other than a binder to keep them safe. You will also want to keep particularly valuable cards in individual sleeves to ensure that they remain in mint condition. Cards that are in mint condition are worth more than ones that have any flaws.

Stay Organized

Keeping trading cards organized is very important. There are different ways to organize. You may choose to:

  • Sort by card manufacturer
  • Sort by teams
  • Sort by statistics
  • Sort by year the cards were manufactured

Any way that your child chooses to organize his cards is okay, as long as he has a game plan. If a friend wants to make a trade, and it takes your child two hours to find one card, the excitement of the moment will vanish, and your child may become frustrated.

Trading Card Shows and Yard Sales

Once your child has gathered a substantial collection of cards, he may find that buying packs or cases of cards is not feasible anymore because of the number of repeat cards he receives. This is the time to venture out to trading card shows and yard sales. Yards sales are where your child can really rake in some good cards, because other kids are selling them all the time (and usually at very good prices, if they are not seriously into the hobby). It is probably best to let an adult help negotiate with dealers at a trading card show, as this can be scary for a child to handle by himself.

Save the Collection

The main reason for having a hobby like sports card trading is to have fun doing something you really enjoy. If your child loses interest in his hobby, be careful to tuck away his collection in a safe place. You'd be surprised at how many adults still love the hobby, and one day your child's cards could be worth some money. We're not talking becoming a millionaire, but some real nice pocket change. It is never a good idea to throw the cards out just because your child has lost interest.
