Thow a Ladybug Birthday BashYour Little Bug Will Love These Fun Party IdeasLadybug, ladybug, fly away home - to a party for your special birthday boy or girl!
Does your little girl or boy love ladybugs (or ladybirds, as they are known down under)? You can score major “super mom” points by throwing the best ladybug birthday party ever. Here’s how: InvitationsSet the tone for your great party with a creative invitation. To make your own ladybug invite, cut a piece of red construction paper or card stock into four oval shapes to represent ladybugs. You can either cut out black paper circles and glue them onto the bug, or have your child help out by drawing the dots on one side of the bugs. On the other side, include the standard invitation information: Who, What, Where, When, and RSVP. It’s as simple as that! Here’s another idea for homemade invites. If you prefer to purchase your invitations, try these. DecorationsOf course you’ll want to start with the obligatory balloons and streamers – black and red are a good start – but what about the fun stuff? What can you do to make the party stand out? Bring on the ladybugs. Cut Styrofoam balls in half and paint them red with black spots. Then apply poster putty to the back of each one, and spread them throughout the house! Ladybugs can climb the walls, hang from the ceiling, stick to doors…anywhere you can imagine. CakeTo make your very own ladybug cake, start with two round cakes of your child’s favorite flavor. Frost one with chocolate icing, set aside. Cut the second cake in half to make wings. Tint white or pink icing red and frost both halves, place the wings on the body (angled to create the illusion of flying). Use black licorice for antennas, and other candies to make eyes, spots, anything your heart desires. Need some ideas? Try brown M&M’s, junior mints and gum drops. TreatsTurn the food table into a giant edible lady bug! Put down a red disposable table cloth, and add Oreo cookies for the “spots.” Add additional finger foods in bowls, and your guests will love to snack. In addition to the usual snacks your kids love, try some fun ladybug snacks tossed in to spice things up. Make oval shaped sugar cookies, and decorate them with red frosting and black spots. Want something a little healthier? Take a red apple, slice it in half and put it down skin side up. Use peanut butter to attach raisins as spots. Yum! ActivitiesUse your computer and printer to create ladybug coloring sheets to entertain the guests as they arrive – keep them around to fill in any down time. A free coloring sheet can be found here. For a bugged out version of musical chairs, cut out leaf shapes from green poster paper and arrange them in a circle on the floor. Play your child’s favorite music, and encourage the children to fly around like ladybugs until the music stops. Try a few rounds of pin the spot on the ladybug, ladybug bean bag toss, or get a ladybug piñata to add to the fun. When it’s time for some quiet, read the Eric Carlyle story “The Grouchy Ladybug.” Gift bagsLooking for a really unique gift to send home with the guests? Buy small ladybug houses and fill them with rocks and leaves, then add live ladybugs. They are available from your local nursery for just a few dollars. Using these ideas will make the day memorable for your little birthday boy or girl, and you’re sure to be the hit of the party!
