Children can make this year's Mother's Day ultra special with some unique gifts that they can make at home.

So Mother’s Day is coming up. What do the kids have for Mum? Fresh flowers, chocolate and cosmetics are great gifts. But some of these can be a tad pricey for kids to buy. So why not make something special for her instead? Surprise Mum with a homemade gift from the heart.

Need some help? Here are some unique homemade gifts that kids can try making. The end products may not look as good as gifts bought from shops but it’s the thought that counts. Plus, part of the fun is making the gifts!

Poems for Mum

Kids with a natural flair for poetry should make good use of this gift. Write a poem or a few poems that honor Mum and the sacrifices she’s made all these years. Those with beautiful handwritings should handwrite the poems. Alternatively, check out the various fonts that the computer has. In fact, there are many ways to embellish poetry using basic software such as the Microsoft Word. Get all the kids in the family to contribute to produce a little booklet of poems for Mum. After presenting Mum with the gift on Mother’s Day, the kids can take turns reciting the poems.

Crafts for Mum

Can’t write poetry? No worries. Make something else for her. Even very little children can draw and color something. When the picture is done, get a cheap photo frame from a bargain shop to frame it up. Kids can also paint seashells or large smooth rocks with messages of love for Mum.

If Mum loves flowers, make her a nice vase using a clean, empty pasta sauce jar or something similar. Decorate the vase with some enamel paint. Use finger prints to create floral designs on the vase. Pick some fresh flowers from the garden, put them in the vase and voila! A new vase with beautiful flowers for Mum on that special day.

Photo Scrapbook for Mum

Get reprints of photos from previous holidays and family outings, organize the photos according to events and dates and then stick them on a special scrapbook just for Mum. Put in funny captions below the pictures. Mum will definitely treasure this gift for years to come.

Special Video for Mum

Advances in video technology allow even the most technologically-challenged the ability to produce homemade videos. Use the family camcorder to make a home video starring the kids, the spouse and the family pets. Older and tech-savvy kids can add in music and other sound effects to jazz up the video. Kids can also produce CDs with songs dedicated to Mum.

Give Mum a Day Off

No talents to make anything? How about giving Mum a well-deserved day off? Surprise Mum with a breakfast, clean up all the mess in the house, look after a younger sibling, feed the dog, etc. Give her another bonus by arranging a movie date for Mum and Dad or an evening out with Mum’s girlfriends. Another gift that will delight Mum is making the pledge to help more with household chores throughout the year, not just on Mother’s Day.

There’s no need to spend too much money to buy a Mother’s Day gift. Homemade gifts from the heart are often more treasured than something bought. Kids can try writing poems, making crafts, creating a photo scrapbook, producing a special video for Mum or just give Mum a day off.
