Few relationships in life are as special as one between a grandchild and a grandparent. For most kids, grandmother and grandfather are synonymous for love, care and fun.

To make this bond even more memorable grandparents should make special activities with their grandchildren. Here are some ideas that every child loves.

Food Brings Joy

Baking cookies from scratch is a fun way to entertain a child. Kids love rolling dough, cutting different figures with cookie molds, and getting flour on their faces. The fun can go on for hours; once the cookies are baked, they’ll have a great time decorating them with icing and sprinkles. Furthermore, it is a treat they can take home and enjoy later.

Planting a tree is a fun and educational activity. Children love playing with dirt and water; and later on, they will be very pleased when their tree starts growing. With a fruit tree the excitement continues every time they get to harvest and eat the fruit. A tomato tree is an excellent choice; they grow almost anywhere, and the fruit appears fairly quickly (45 to 90 days).

Art Session

Paper crafts, finger painting, drawing with chalks on the sidewalk, painting a piece of pottery, decorating a tee shirt with fabric paint and appliqués; the possibilities are endless. Kids love using their imagination to create works of art.

Grandparents can make the most of a holiday by creating fun crafts with their grandchildren. Together they can carve a pumpkin for Halloween, make a gingerbread house for Christmas, decorate Easter eggs, and make a pasta flag for the Fourth of July.

Memories last longer when the children make something they can keep, such as a piece of clothing, a framed painting, or a decoration for their room.

Read a Story and Reenact

Little Red Riding Hood, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, The Three Little Pigs; these are all fairy tales that are fun to read and reenact. Grandparents can keep it fun by using a different tone of voice with each character, making facial expressions, and using their hands to better express the story. Afterward the child can dress up, set a stage and reenact the fairy tale.

If grandma is tired or if time is limited, she can keep it simple by coloring, reading a book in bed or watching a movie with her grandchildren.

All in all, grandparents should just have fun and enjoy their grandchildren. They should never let a minute go by without making them feel special.
