Elmo, Grover and the rest of the Sesame Street Live gang thrill children and critics alike. Read on for a summary, ticket information and other performance points
Since 1969 kids of all ages, all over the world have asked the same question – Can you tell me how to get, how to get to Sesame Street? (1969, Joe Raposo; Jon Stone; Bruce Hart) Since most children can’t visit Sesame Street in person, Sesame Street goes to them! Big Bird, Oscar, Elmo and the gang invite young fans to enter their brightly colored world of fun and learning in three Broadway-quality productions. Appearing in cities all over the United States Sesame Street Live makes children’s dreams come true.
What do you want to be when you grow up? It’s a question kids love to answer! In When Elmo Grows Up, one of the three featured children's productions, the Sesame Street friends do a little dreaming of their own. Grover wants to be a police officer; Bert and Ernie plan to be forest rangers and Telly dreams of life as a cowboy. Kids also meet Abby Cadabby, one of Sesame Street’s newest members, who wants to be a fairy godmother! In an opening song Prairie Dawn invites children to let their imaginations soar when she sings, If you can see it, you can be it.
In traditional Sesame Street style, kids who attend a performance of When Elmo Grows Up will learn a few lessons along the way. Grover the police officer reminds friends to walk and not run on Sesame Street, and Elmo, Cookie Monster and Mr. Noodle explain the highs and lows of weather forecasting, featuring the letters H and L. Mr. Noodle invites children to help him know what to wear when it’s raining, first appearing on stage in a bathing suit, then a winter coat, and finally a raincoat and hat. Rosita also teaches kids to say friend in Spanish. She invites all amigos in the audience to join her in a simple chorus, reinforcing the lesson.
Kids-at-heart will take a stroll down memory lane during When Elmo Grows Up as they join the Muppets in singing familiar songs, such as Buffalo Gals and Down on the Corner. The performance also includes timeless children’s songs like The Itsy Bitsy Spider and I’ve Been Workin’ on the Railroad. Adults will note, however, that things have changed since they watched as children. Sesame Street has become a technological neighborhood! The show features a dancing computer that tells Elmo, “You have mail.” Cookie Monster and Elmo also have to download the weather forecast!
Lovable characters who often leave the stage to stroll through the audience and greet the children, vivid scenery, educational opportunities, delightful music and a creative storyline make When Elmo Grows Up a wonderful adventure for the whole family. In fact, both kids and adults will have so much fun that they will leave the performance agreeing with Elmo, who decided that he just wanted to be a kid.
