Winter Bird Bath

Give birds the water they need

© Elece Hollis

It's fun to feed the birds and watch them eat but birds need water too.

If everything outside is cold and frozen, birds will need water to drink and bathe in. A large pan or a trash can lid or an overturned plastic sled can serve as a bird bath.

Set the container in a sunny place close to a window where you can stand to watch the fun. The birds will drink from the supply and also wash their dirty sticky feathers so they will stay warmer.

Be sure to keep fresh water in the pan and refill it everyday. If it freezes even in the sunshine, tip out the ice and refill every day.

Keep a notebook and a bird field guide close by so you can identify the birds that come and record the names. Try sketching a few of your favorites.
