Children love to work with seeds and soil. Here are some great projects for them to try. The projects listed in my recent article, Gardening Gifts for Spring, include seed embedded paper to plant, potting ivy cuttings that have been rooted in water, potting or boxing up bulbs in potting soil, bagging bulbs for children to plant outdoors, and canning seeds in potting soil to brighten someone's windowsill.
These gardening projects would make fun birthday party activities. Have each child make up his flower "kit" and take it home with him as a party favor. They are all just hands-on and messy enough to be real hits with moms, teachers, and children.
You may find in these activities a new way to celebrate the coming of spring. These projects are simple enough and quick enough to be used in the classroom and Sunday school. They would make good group activities as a community service to the elderly. You may start an exciting new family tradition of announcing spring with flowering kits.
