Plant a Patriotic Garden

During World War II Americans helped fight the war by growing vegetables. Here is a simple plan for a backyard garden.

Every year I get my children in on the gardening effort. We grow tomatoes, peppers, okra, melons, cucumbers, greens, and other vegetables. This year as our big brother is off fighting in Iraq, we are planting a Victory garden. We will enjoy the proceeds and also learn how we can support the troops and encourage them.

Planting a spring vegetable garden is always a good learning experience for children. Many schools now have gardens and children can grow flowers and vegetables to learn about agriculture, the science of growing plants, and also coorperation. Sunflowers seem to be a popular choose with kids. It sure makes for a homier schoolyard.

What kid is there that doesn't love digging in dirt and planting seeds? My youngest hopes to grow a crop of peanuts. She has been reading about how the peanuts are grown and harvested. What better way to learn and to feel the healing therapy of helping in the war effort than through a vegetable garden?

Don't underestimate the value of the fresh air, sunshine, and healthy eating that comes from growing a vegetable garden.
